Division 2 Wausau East Sectional Final Review

Yesterday afternoon, the La Crosse Central Red Raiders faced off against the Merrill Bluejays in a Division 2 sectional final held at Wausau East. Central has made three straight trips to Madison, and made it four with an 81-55 over the top-seeded Jays. Central had a dogfight with Mississippi Valley Conference rival Onalaska on Thursday night, beating the Hilltoppers 54-51, but showed no signs of fatigue as one of the best teams in Division 2 rolled to another sectional title. The Raiders led 34-23 at halftime, but put up 47 points in the second half to pull away. Johnny Davis, one of the top 2020 recruits in the state of Wisconsin, threw down four thunderous dunks and was by far the best player on the court throughout the contest. He paced Central with 24 points. UW-Oshkosh recruit Quinn Steckbauer finished his stellar Merrill recruit with a 25 point performance, including 15 in the first half. However, the length and press of La Crosse Central proved to be too much. Central moves on to the state tournament where they were awarded the 3 seed and will play Milwaukee Washington in a rematch of last year's Division 2 semifinal game, won by Washington by a 70-58 margin.

This was my first time in the Wausau East gym, and I was quite impressed. Spacious and deep seating on both sides of the court allowed for a lot of fans to enter, and the bleachers had lots of room so your legs did not feel cramped. I loved the Lumberjack logos on the floor and the conference logo at the free throw line was also something that was a welcome sight but not see every day.
